And Now The End is Near...

...and so Gordon Brown, the unelected Prime Minister of Britain faces his final curtain. At 10.00pm on Thursday the polls will close on the UK general election  - and I strongly suspect it will be the end of the line for Brown. If - or should that be when - it happens little time will pass before the Labour Party will be holding a leadership election of their own. Brown will be shown the door and, having seen the impact of David Cameron on the Conservatives and Nick Clegg on the Liberal Democrats, the smart money will be on a younger, more media savvy person to lead the party. Andy Burnham? David Miliband? Ed Miliband Or how about Glenn Miliband? (he's not been seen for years though....)

What all this will mean, however, is the near certainty the Tories will return to power in the UK for the first time in thirteen years. Even if they have to rely on sharing some of that power with the Liberal Democrats. Scots remember all too well what happened the last time the Conservative Party was in government - Margaret Thatcher tried her damnest to destroy Scotland.

It may prove significant, however. Few people in Scotland want more years of Tory rule. If David Cameron is elected as Prime Minister on Friday the impact may well start the final push towards independence for our country.

Every cloud and all that...

This is the worst election I can remember. No obvious party to support, or oppose, and three stuffed dummies elected because of TV appearances!
Policy not required it appears.....

The day of reckoning has arrived!
Are you for an independent Scotland Mike? What advantages does independence give Scotland?
And final question would you be happy if Gordon Brown was re elected?

Mike, Gordon Brown was elected. The good people of Fife put him in Westminster as their MP - that's the end of that argument in my view unless you are in agreement with the Americanisation of our politics based on voting for presidents.

We do not elect an individual, we are electing a party, supposedly on the basis of its policies.

Brown is a good man - he's just not media friendly and the Tory press have been gunning for him since day one. He's a dour Scot that middle Englanders just love to mock and denigrate.

And the result tomorrow will be a return to the dark old days of right-wing elitist dogma where if you are rich, mostly by inherited money, you will prosper.

The rest of us? Disaster.

Adullamite - you may be right; it seems a lot of people didn't even get the chance to vote!

Peggy - Too right I'm for an independent Scotland! It's high time we controlled our own country. If the likes of Norway and Ireland can do it so can we - we can't make a bigger mess of things than they have in London.

Burdock - The good people of Fife elected Brown as a MP - but how many people wanted him as PM? How many people would have voted Labour in 2005 if they knew Brown would become PM within a couple of years?

Well a hung parliament....noone is surprised at that result!
Will the Labour party form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats?
Interesting times Mike.

I have been interested in this from afar. Shame Gordon just didnt seem to have the personality or presence or whatever with the public. He just did not seem likeable regardless of the party he represented. And fingers crossed that you do get independence which is what should happen.

By the way, I was listening to the radio this morning about family trees, apparently there are more Smiths in Scotland than most places. There was even some mention that the name Smith came from Scotland. I wouldnt have picked it but thought of you straight away. Something to do with people being called after their trades - blacksmith, silversmith etc. Anyway have gone right off topic now...
