Thatcher

She tried to destroy many communities and the dreams of many people in Scotland. Industries such as coal mining, steel making and shipbuilding all but disappeared under her leadership. Few people north of the border voted Conservative so it didn't matter to her or her government how much pain and heartache she inflicted.

Although it could be argued she pushed Scots closer to the notion of independence, I doubt there will be many people in Scotland mourning her passing.

Being of the younger generation I alway remember the introduction of the Poll Tax... well when I say introduction, it was more of a trial - in Scotland and based on if it didn't work in Scotland then she wouldn't dream of introducing it on her own doorstep!

Any chance the Tories had of getting Scotland back on their side evaporated the day Cameron paraded on the doorsteps on No.10 with Thatcher at his side. That says it all about the feeling, or lack of for her in Scotland.

No love lost here but I did admire her dedication and drive.

Just because you are dead does not automatically mean you should be given some respect. Respect should be earned through your actions in life.
Unfortunately Margaret Thatcher impoverished a lot of towns and destroyed many lives.

Vickster - spot on.

Gillian - she certainly drove the Scots to despair

Peggy - you've hit the nail on the head.

Yes hers was a tumultuous leadership that did destroy many lives of ordinary working people. Whole industries gone. Remember people were on strike for a year or so and families must have nearly starved. Disgusting really. They should have had a private funeral and be done with it as it is going to cause lots of stress and hardship to resurface. She truly seemed a cold sociopath in many of her actions even to her own kids. Explains how they turned out.
